Assisting online education at Kavaja Youth Detention Centre
Most students suffered a huge disruption to their education when Albania entered a national lockdown in response to the coronavirus outbreak in spring of 2020. The provision of education continued to be severely affected after the lockdown ended as new social distancing requirements impacted on face-to-face education. In response Albania saw a rapid increase in the need to provide online education to students.
Many vulnerable students have been unable to catch up on their education as they lack appropriate IT equipment to participate in online classes. One particularly vulnerable group of students to be affected has been young offenders being held at the national Youth Detention Centre in Kavaja. In order to facilitate online learning for youth offenders, Help in Albania donated eight desktop computers, two laptops and five TVs to the computer lab at the Kavaja Youth Detention Centre. To mark these donations, on 9 July 2020 Mrs Etilda Gjonaj, the then Minister of Justice, and Mr Peter Zingraf, the German Ambassador to Albania, attended the 2019/20 graduation ceremony for the students at the Youth Detention Centre.
The donation of this computer equipment was funded by German Government and implemented with support from Plan & Go, one of Help’s local partners in Albania.
