Kindergarten Renovation in Kavaja
Supporting children affected by 2019 earthquake get back to school
The 2019 earthquake in Albania damaged many buildings in the municipalities surrounding the earthquake’s epicentre. One such building was the Tre dëshmorët (Three Martyrs) kindergarten in the city of Kavaja. The kindergarten suffered severely damage to its roof, walls and basement and following a structural survey the building was found to be unsafe.
Prior to the earthquake over 100 local children attended the Tre dëshmorët (Three Martyrs) kindergarten on a daily basis. After the kindergarten was deemed to be unsafe it had to shut its doors to these local children and their families. The lack of this kindergarten caused significant economic problems to local families using this early childhood development facility. While the kindergarten was closed parents had to stay home and look after their children and could not go to work, dramatically affecting the income of these families.
Help, working in partnership with the Municipality of Kavaja and Plan & Go a local NGO, organised the reconstruction of the Tre dëshmorët kindergarten. The reconstruction works started in March 2020 and took two months to complete. The kindergarten was reopened in May 2020 at a ceremony attended by both the German Ambassador to Albania and the Mayor of Kavaja. Help was happy to support young children in Kavaja getting back to their kindergarten and their important pre-school experiences such as play, drawing, social interaction activities with their peers.
